Static Electricity Project Details

Here are some thoughts:

            Try it in the dark!

Try filling the can (not completely to the top) with water.

Hold the “fuzzy wire” near your cat’s fur while you pet him to collect the charge.  Just don’t touch the bolt until you’re ready to ZAP!

            Look up “Triboelectric Series”.

Read: Homemade Lightning by R. A. Ford.

            Look up “Dielectric”.

Read about Van de Graaff generators.

Buy a tiny neon bulb at Radio Shack – What happens if:

You hold one wire and touch the second wire to the PVC pipe (after you rub it).

you hold one wire and touch the second wire to the charged film can’s bolt.  Do you have to touch the outside foil and touch the wire to the bolt?

You hold one wire, walk on a carpet while scraping your feet and touch the second wire to a doorknob or some other metal object?

Experiment and have lots of fun!!!  By the way, it could be the basis for a great Science Fair Project            that you would really enjoy doing!
