Meet Susan Campbell

Founder of Science Safari—Lifelong Explorer, Educator, and Builder of Wonder

Susan Campbell is a lifelong science lover, field trekker, animal enthusiast (everything except mosquitoes), and voracious reader. Since 1994, she has designed and delivered over 1,700 after-school programs, science camps, and educational experiences—reaching more than 80,000 participants across a wide variety of settings.
With her contagious enthusiasm, Susan makes science fun, hands-on, and unforgettable. Whether she's working with toddlers or seniors, neurodivergent or neurotypical learners, teachers, or teen oncology patients, her programs engage minds, inspire curiosity, and spark a lasting interest in the natural world.

Science with Tools, Tinkering, and Big Fun

Susan isn't just an educator—she's a woodworker, metalworker, prop designer, builder, and fixer. Her hands-on experience gives her unique insight into the tools, devices, and concepts behind the science she teaches. Every session she leads is designed to engage participants through vivid demonstrations, DIY projects, and real-world applications. Many participants even get to take home a scientific tool or project they created themselves.

The LOLA Legacy

One of Susan's most impactful creations was the Lakewood Outdoor Learning Area (LOLA) in Dallas ISD. She conceived and coordinated the LOLA program and led each classroom outdoors—half a class per trail trip—every year for four years. Each program culminated in a one-night, student-led exhibition: the Lakewood Museum of Natural History.
Even now, more than two decades later, students still explore and learn in the LOLA—a testament to Susan's enduring influence on environmental education.

From hiking with inner-city kids among dinosaur tracks to indoor workshops with toddlers, Susan knows how to connect, captivate, and communicate with every audience. Her energy is often described as contagious—and it shows.

A New Chapter in Terrell, TX

Now based just east of Dallas in Terrell, TX, Susan is discovering a new landscape and setting the stage for fresh adventures. During the pandemic, she began reimagining how to deliver her science programs and finally started organizing 25 years of materials, notes, and plans—including seven 7-foot industrial shelves packed with parts, prototypes, and projects.
